What Gretchen Wore

I am really enjoying the pieces I am receiving from this website – http://www.gwynniebee.com. Check out my blog from December 9th that explains how the website works. This black and white chevron dress arrived over the weekend, and I couldn’t wait to wear it. I added a single strand turquoise necklace and black sling back pumps today; however this dress could be accessorized in a multitude of ways. You could even add a jacket on a cold day. I have decided to purchase this piece. The retail price is $138, but I snagged it for only $35!!!

Style Tips on Wearing Flannel / Plaid

One of my favorite fall fashion staples is a plaid shirt. Plaid shirts, or flannel shirts as some people call them, are so versatile and can be worn in a million different ways. And do not forget that they are ridiculously comfortable and usually inexpensive. Considering that flannels are one of the best things about cold weather fashion, you definitely do not want to miss out on them. You also do not want to get stuck in a rut of only wearing them with jeans and flats or boots. There are so many other things to do with a plaid shirt, no matter how casual it seems. Here are some style tips on how to wear a plaid shirt.

1. Start simple. Layer it under a cardigan to keep warm and super casual.
2. An over-sized plaid shirt can be worn open as a cardigan, and looks like a cute layer with denim shorts and tights.
3. Accessorize with a chunky knit scarf and a beanie to stay warm, and pair your plaid shirt with jeans for a comfy weekend outfit.
4. Mix your plaid shirt with another pattern or print, like these leopard shoes. How fun!
5. Forget jeans. Tuck your plaid shirt into a skater skirt and add tights for a gorgeous winter look.
6. Tuck your plaid shirt into your jeans and add a colorful belt for a streamlined look that is a little more polished.
7. You can make a plaid shirt more professional simply by adding an eye catching blazer.
8. Unbutton your plaid shirt and wear it open over an all black outfit to look chic and effortless.
9. Layer your plaid shirt under a sweater and let the collar and sleeves pop out for a preppy look.

New Year’s Eve

If you have been lucky enough to be attending a New Year’s Eve party, you need to know how to dress for the occasion in an eye catching manner. Most parties are festive and a little wild, and your style needs to reflect that. To leave a lasting impression with your hosts and the other guests, choose a daring, glitzy outfit and appropriately daring shoes and accessories. Finish your look by highlighting your best facial features with dramatic makeup. Here are some of my ideas for creating the perfect New Year’s Eve look.

1. Choose a length that works for you. Short skirts are relatively standard for New Year’s Eve, but if you feel uncomfortable baring that much skin, stick with a skirt that falls at or just above the knee. Choose a length that makes you look and feel your best, regardless of tradition.
2. Select an interesting neckline. Instead of a straight cut neckline, consider something a little more flirtatious, like a crisscross strap or strapless sweetheart neckline. For a more conservative option, try a festive scoop neck that keeps your shoulders covered but exposes part of your collarbone.
3. Try a one shoulder dress. One shoulder dresses create a dramatic flair that works perfectly for a New Year’s Eve party. Moreover, playing peek-a-boo with your shoulders can often look sultrier than keeping both shoulders bare.
4. Go backless. If you feel a little wary about exposing your shoulders or chest, but you have a toned back with fairly clear skin, a daring backless dress might be the perfect option for you. A conservative front keeps things looking classy, while the exposed back shows a tempting glimpse of flesh.
5. Try on a sequined dress. For most people, there are not many occasions when you can get away with wearing a sequined dress. On New Year’s Eve, however, sequins are not only welcome, but classic. If a sequined dress is too much sparkle for your style, opt for a sequined skirt instead. Match the skirt with a simple fitted tank top or blouse. A solid black top offers an especially nice contrast with your shimmery skirt.
6. Look at lush velvet. Velvet is a luxurious material and makes an excellent alternative to sequins for dinner parties and other classy festivities. Make the most of this look by choosing an alluring hue, like turquoise, rather than a drab black.
7. Try on a metallic jean. If you plan on attending a casual party or ringing in the New Year with a small group of close friends, keep things simple by wearing a metallic jean. Metallic jeans have a tint of gold or silver overlaying the denim, making them a little dressier than your everyday jeans.
8. Keep things muted with a simple pattern. If you are keeping things casual this New Year’s Eve, a fitted tank top or blouse with a simple yet festive pattern might be all you need. Prints themed to the occasion include stars and fireworks. Match it with a metallic jean if you want to add a little shimmer.
9. Make your accessories shimmer. Diamonds and similarly sparkly stones add class and glitz to your ensemble. A little can go a long way. Try a pair of simple diamond posts or a pendant with a diamond charm.
10. Choose a centerpiece accessory. You can get away with some large, flashy jewelry for the occasion, but there is still such a thing as “too much of a good thing.” Instead of wearing several large pieces of jewelry, find one piece that can take center stage—like extravagant chandelier earrings or an ornate necklace—and keep the rest of you jewelry, if you wear any, simple and subdued.

My Favorite Casual Look

You may be looking for a casual yet chic outfit for your next lunch date, weekend getaway or impromptu party. Men and women alike can rock the blazer and jeans look, without a lot of angst. Separately, a blazer and jeans are time worn classics, but by combining these wardrobe staples in your fashion diet, your style will never go hungry. I love a simple tshirt under the blazer for a causal look. Accessorize with belts, trendy handbags, scarves and jewelry to add an immediate wow factor to your look.

Too Old For Leggings?

Recently I was having a conversation with someone who asked if leggings were still “in” and if they were too old to wear them. My reply was that they are still around and are generally more flattering than a lot of the bright colored tights that are currently out in the marketplace, as leggings tend to be black, so they draw less attention to your legs than a hot pink pair of tights. Further, they are a great option when the weather is a bit cooler in the morning, and you may want to wear a skirt or dress with a ballet flat, peep toe or even sling backs, as they give you the option to take them off easily if the weather gets too warm during the day. They can add some extra coverage to a skirt or dress that is a little on the short side, or just warmth to your legs if you need it. They also create a longer flattering line from the end of your skirt hem lower down your leg that can visually elongate your legs. BUT remember, leggings are NOT a substitute for pants or a skirt. They are hosiery. Do not wear them with just a tshirt or top – you look like you forgot to finish getting dressed.

My New Obsession ~ Gingham

Despite all the pinup girl and western lady stereotypes that go along with gingham, it is a fabric worth having in your wardrobe. I have a fresh perspective on the pattern. Check out these outfit ideas below that offer plenty of inspiration for jumping aboard the gingham train. You might be surprised by how versatile the print is, so give it a try.
