The Little White Dress

Of course we have all heard of the Little Black Dress (LBD), but the Little White Dress (LWD) can be a fresh and summery alternative that is equally versatile. You can dress it down, or make it glam with just a few key accessories. It is just the perfect, easy piece to throw on during the summer. Like most wardrobe staples, this item has infinite possibilities and can work in so many ways depending on how you style it. You can go dressy, casual or something in between depending on the other items you add. Why not try one of these styling suggestions below?

Casual: Wear your dress in the most casual way possible by adding a denim jacket and some cute ballet flats. This will ensure you will not look like that prissy girl who is completely overdressed.
Office: Make your dress job interview appropriate by topping it off with a boyfriend blazer. Add some flat metallic flats, and you are equal parts stylish and professional. This would be a great outfit to wear during your summer internship because even if its hot outside, it is likely going to be pretty cold in the office.
Simple: Add some nude wedges to make your legs look like they go on forever . This is the most versatile, simple and flattering way to style the LWD. No jacket or crazy accessories needed for this classic look. You could add fun clutch for that pop of color. This look would be ideal for a BBQ or any other slightly fancy outdoor event.
Glam: The white dress is sort of more of a daytime look, but you can totally style it for a night out. Try adding a leather jacket, a piece of statement jewelry and some high heel strappy sandals. The edginess of the leather and metallic will help neutralize the innocent little girl vibe of a white dress.

Do’s & Dont’s for Summer

DO go girly with a white lace top. Summer is here. As we eagerly anticipate the season of fun and frivolity, it is time to prep our closets with some of summer’s biggest fashion trends. You can dress up a white lace top with a skirt and heels or dress it down with denim shorts and sandals. You could even try pairing it with boots and a leather jacket to turn the feminine piece into something more edgy. DON’T underestimate the power of a tshirt dress. The throw on and go tshirt dress is perfect for summer. Wear yours from day to night by transitioning into slightly fancier footwear and some fun accessories. The bonus is they are easy to travel with, and they rarely wrinkle. DO add a splash of color. Find a brightly colored bag or shoes to pair with your wardrobe basics. This will infuse a little summer into an otherwise neutral outfit. DON’T be afraid to show a little skin. Though it is more of a weekend look than one for work, the crop top trend is wonderful for summer. Pair a loose version of the trend with a high waisted bottom to avoid showing a little too much tummy. DO invest in a dressier pair of shorts. They do not have to break the bank, but have a pair of shorts in a more tailored silhouette on hand. In the right cut and fabric, they can work for a casual office look or a dressy night out. DO make sure you have a classic white shirt. Basically, every outfit looks polished when you start with a crisp white shirt. You can even throw it over a bathing suit at the beach. DO continue to layer. Layering is not just for winter months. Simply adding a tshirt under a sundress is ideal for summer. Try this styling trick when you are totally bored with your favorite summer outfits.

Brighten Your Day ~ Wear Yellow

The color yellow is always a popular color choice during spring and summer. Yellow is associated with laughter, happiness, optimism and good times. All the more reason to wear it wholeheartedly. You may dismiss yellow immediately as a color that you cannot wear, but you do not have to go full out in yellow to embrace the color. Since yellow is a bright color, you do not need much of it to give your outfit just that bit of color or extra flair. There are several ways to incorporate yellow into your wardrobe. How about a yellow jacket?
How about as a top? Fabulous when paired with neutral bottoms like blue jeans or white slacks. If solid yellow is too bright for you, then choose a striped one. You can minimize the effect of the yellow by combining your yellow top (like a tank) with a blazer in a more neutral color. This will still give you the hip vibrancy of yellow without the yellow overpowering you too much.
How about as part of a print? If you do not want to go for all out yellow but like the happy vibe of yellow, then choose a print that includes this color.
How about as an accessory? If you are not too keen on wearing color but still like to liven up your outfit with a bit of sunshine, then accessorizing is the way to go. It is an excellent way to add color to your outfit and take it to the next level. Very nice with an all white outfit or a black and white combination. Just add a yellow bag, belt, scarf or necklace and you are good to go. This is by far the easiest way to add a bit of yellow to your wardrobe and still get the benefits.

What Gretchen Wore

I found this royal blue summer dress at Lane Bryant on the clearance rack for $39.97, 50% off the original price. The arm holes were too big, so I spent $8 on tailoring. Therefore, making this awesome dress less than $50. I have no doubt I will be wearing it all summer long!! I paired today’s look with my yellow statement necklace from Belk (See my post from Saturday 5/24 about the necklace). I added my caramel colored strappy wedge heels from (39.95) to complete the look.

12 Pieces ~ 72 Outfits

Most women want a well functioning wardrobe, but are not sure exactly how to go about getting one. They want to stop wasting money on clothes, yet shop in a random fashion, without a list and then wonder why they have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear. Does this sound like you? Well, I have the answer. If you follow my formula below, you will have a fabulous wardrobe that mixes and matches easily and allows you countless options to wear. Here is the formula:

2 x jackets or cardigans (top layers)
4 x bottoms (skirts/pants)
6 x tops
Each jacket must work with all the tops and bottoms. Each top must work with all the bottoms.

As you can imagine, this formula is fabulous for traveling. Also, this is the way to go if you are in the process of losing weight, or just want a versatile wardrobe that does not cost a fortune. Now I imagine that you are thinking, how do I choose the right 12 garments? Consider the following tips.

1. Neutral Color – Choose any neutral as your base color. This way you easily wear the neutral garments multiple times, without drawing attention to them.

2. Accent Colors – Consider bold and bright accent colors. Pinks, green and shades of blue all work beautifully with the neutral navy base, plus work well with each other.

3. Patterns in Tops Only – Plain jacket and cardigan, plain skirts and pants, makes it much easier to mix them all together.

4. Versatility – The styles of tops and bottoms you chose should allow you to dress them up and down. From a pencil skirt, a jersey jacket to a navy cardigan, the range allowed you to go from smart casual to casual very easily.

5. No Two Garments are the Same – It would have been very easy to choose one of the tops and get it in 6 different colors, but then you tend to feel like you are wearing the same clothes over and over. Chose a variety, longer and shorter sleeves, different fabrics, cuts and necklines to give me the maximum ability to change up the look of each outfit.

Now these 12 garments will easily make 72 outfits. One extra top will take your outfit options to 84, or one extra cardigan or jacket to 96 outfits!

Holiday Weekend Shopping

One of my favorite times to shop is during a holiday weekend, because most department stores offer great deals and sales. I definitely scored today. I found two statement bib necklaces like the one pictured below on sale. I purchased a yellow one, originally priced at $48 for $23.04 on sale. Then I found a teal one on the sale rack for $11.99. According to my receipt, I saved a total of $60.97. Sweet.

Memorial Day Attire

Whether you are a beach bum like me or a country girl, headed to our nation’s capital or just out with friends, I have some fashion tips you need for a very stylish Memorial Day weekend. This is a definitely a shorts and sundresses sort of occasion!! Remember the three important S-pieces: swimsuits, sandals, and sneakers for fun in the sun! I suggest going light on the jewelry, since you could be in for a hot and active weekend. If your holiday weekend is centered around a casual party, where the invitation is just ambiguous enough to give you pause then go with a sundress, maxi dress or pretty skirt.
Are you heading somewhere more upscale, like a resort? Then, I would go with this white crochet dress. It is figure flattering and comfortable.
Your key pieces for any holiday weekend should be the things that make you smile and you feel great wearing. Your favorite jeans or shorts, a well fitted t shirt or blouse that dresses up and down, a flattering summer dress that needs only a necklace to take you from tea at the Ritz to beers by the pool, comfortable shoes and of course a jacket or cardigan, so if the night turns chilly you are prepared.
